SlangScots is actually an official dialect, and to try and list all the Scots words used in common parlance here would take far more time than I have. Most of the time we speak recognisable English, but it's peppered with words most non-Scots don't understand. If we hang around non-Scots long enough these tend to disappear, but a five-minute phone call from someone from home and they come flooding back. Here's an online Scots dictionary: http://www.scots-online.org/dictionary/ to help you in the first instance. A few things to highlight though: a Scottish dialect cannot be achieved in fic simply by removing the last letter of a word and replacing it with an apostrophe. For certain words - principally 'of' - this applies, but not for most others. One very common mistake is wha' for what. It would usually be whit. Most Scottish people would use "aye" instead of "yes" in spoken language too. |
