Oi! Yanks! No!

History and Myth

First, when in doubt, ignore Hollywood. They have this thing where they don't like it when facts intrude on flashy storytelling. Also ignore anything that Mel Gibson directed. Right, got that in mind? Here are some pet peeves, there will be more added... (there's also going to be a few basic facts added in)

410 AD was when the Romans sent the letter that said 'look to your own defences, Rome no longer cares' when we requested some help with the increased Saxon/Angle/Jute invasions. Not 450 AD, as according to the film King Arthur.
And anyone complaining about lack of women with ice cream cones on their heads - Le Morte d'Arthur was written in Tudor times. By a bloke locked up in the tower for rape, grand larceny and all-round bastardry. Previous tales were written by French Crusaders. The ones previous to *that* were Welsh. Get the images of grand tourneys out of your heads, will you? There is no concrete Arthur myth.

1066 was when the Normans invaded. Britain was not a wasteland of barbarism before then. We had quite a good system of government in place before it.

U-571, Enigma machines and anything to do with World War II

It was the British navy who captured the bloody Enigma machine, not the Yanks. See the film Enigma or read the book for more details. Seriously. It's a very big sticking point for people in England, and anyone who had relatives who had anything to do with the operation, or were involved in deciphering messages get rather offended. Myself included. Oh, and we'd been fighting the war in Europe for two years before the Americans joined.
